BALTIMORE, MD – March 16, 2010 -- WFN: World Fishing Network, the nation's only 24-hour fishing lifestyle TV channel, enters the Chesapeake region today in a big way. With the help of Baltimore OF/DH and avid angler Luke Scott, WFN is making its presence felt with the launch of a consumer sweepstakes and a web site - http://www.wfnchesapeake.com. - dedicated to finding the Chesapeake’s most passionate angler.
Scott, who has hit 48 home runs for Baltimore over the past two seasons, will pick one lucky angler to spend the day fishing with him at the 27th annual Championship on the Chesapeake spring tournament on May 1, 2010. The fishing trip will be covered by a WFN camera crew and will air on the network at a later date. The grand prize also includes $1,000 and WFN merchandise. In addition, all entries received by April 1, 2010 will be eligible to win two tickets to see Scott play in the home opener on April 9, from the WFN luxury suite.
Chesapeake area anglers can go to http://www.wfnchesapeake.com
to enter. To bolster their chances of winning, entrants are encouraged to promote their entry on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. To enter, fans must tell WFN and Scott in 200 words or less why every day is a great day for fishing. Entrants are also encouraged to include a photo with entry. Scott and WFN will select the winner on April 20. As part of the promotion, fans will get to talk fishing and get a free autograph from Scott when he visits a local fishing retailer on April 10, 2010.
WFN's high definition channel, WFN HD, is available in the Chesapeake area on DISH Network (channel 394), Verizon FiOS (channel 594) and AT&T U-verse (channel 1679). Verizon FiOS also carries WFN SD on channel 317.
"The Chesapeake is one of the nation's top fishing areas and the demand for the network is huge—which is why we've decided to launch this major promotional initiative here," said Mark Rubinstein, President & CEO of WFN. "Spending the day on the water with Luke Scott, an avid angler and major league ballplayer, is surely a fish tale that will last a lifetime."
Fishing in the Chesapeake is big business with massive participation. More than 1.5 million people fish the area each year, spending more than 17 million days fishing with total related expenditures at more than $1.3 billion.*
Scott, a native of De Leon, Florida, attended Oklahoma State University before being drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 9th round of the 2001 draft. He was traded to the Astros in 2004. After a “cup of coffee” with Houston in 2005, he made a late season splash with the Astros the following season batting .336 with 10 homers in only 214 at bats. He earned a bigger role in 2007 and responded with 18 homers and 64 RBI in 369 at bats. In the off-season he was one of five players traded to Baltimore for former MVP Miguel Tejada. With Baltimore, Scott has been a consistent bat in the middle of the line-up with 23 HR, 65 RBI and a .257 average in 2008 and 25 HR, 77 RBI, and a .258 average last season.
