As they came off a 2-2 weekend series with the Rangers, the Orioles went to Chicago and faced a White Sox team hanging onto dear life in the American League Central.
They lost last night to the White Sox, 7-5, as Jeremy Guthrie (7-13) was not sharp has he's been in the last month, giving up six runs in 6 2/3 innings. The Orioles fine until the seventh inning, where they were tied 2-2 with the White Sox, and then things went crazy. Chicago scored four runs in the frame to decide the game, as Gordon Beckham's three-run perhaps decided Baltimore's fate.
The Orioles nearly came back in the ninth, down 7-2 nearly pummeling the Chicago bullpen. They scored three times in their final frame as both Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis drove in runs, and off a Ty Wigginton double play; however, they were not table to extend the game as Luke Scott popped up to end the contest.
Gavin Floyd (9-10) earned the win going seven innings and giving up only two runs.
If there were any good news from Tuesday's game, Felix Pie went 3-for-4, plus Luke Scott hit his 25th homer of the season in the fourth inning); however, Adam Jones had to leave the game due to a shoulder contusion after being hit by a pitch. I'd imagine based on what was said in the Baltimore Sun, Jones may miss a game or so to heal. As well, Luke Scott may be ailing.
As we all know, the Orioles started off the first week under Showalter on a strong note, over the past week, they've look more like what most envision the team to be. Baltimore is 2-6 in their last eight games.
In addition, the Orioles cliched their 13th losing season last night with the 82nd loss of the season (against 44 wins).
Speaking of the losing, former manager Dave Trembley spoke with the media this morning in a Q&A after not being heard from since his dismissal a few months ago. Take a chance to read the interview, and while he's classy, up-front, plus matter-of-fact in terms of answering the questions posed to him -- one can sense that Trembley still somewhat disappointed until this very day.
Finally, happy birthday to the 'Iron Man', Cal Ripken. He turned the big 5-0 this week.
