Last night at a cool Camden Yards, the Baltimore Orioles snapped a five game losing streak, and perhaps a potential mainstay of the rotation may have been introduced.
The Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox, 10-3, as they broke a five-game losing steak and the offense also came alive again as Aubrey Huff delivered with two home runs and Nick Markakis -- who leads the American League in RBI -- had a perfect night at the plate with four hits. As well, Luke Scott went 3-for-4.
More importantly, Tuesday's game was so important because it brought forth the introduction of Brad Bergesen. The righty, who pitched well out of Spring Training, but didn't make the squad because he had not pitched above Triple-A found himself inserted into the rotation after Alfredo Simon went on the disabled list for an elbow injury.
Bergesen -- who does not throw hard, but has impeccable control -- impressed those in attendance going 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs, but only one earned. I watched a little of him on TV last night, and think while he may not be that "sexy" arm we want, he does his job and does it well.
He ran into a jam in the fourth inning where he gave up two runs, but the offense helped him out. Bergesen left in the sixth inning and the crowd was more than appreciative as they gave him a standing ovation on the way back to the dugout. Danys Baez, Chris Ray, Jim Johnson and Brian Bass helped keep the White Sox at bay.
Before we get too excited, let's not forget what Chris Waters did in his first start ever in the majors versus Los Angeles last year, but how his career his turned out so far; therefore, let's be realistic about things. However, I don't see Bergesen being in the same class as Waters in the least -- the former seems to have a much better track record in the minors than the latter.
Finally, I'm glad to see Lou Montanex back up in Baltimore. He drove up from Norfolk to Baltimore to suit up and start in left, and he had a hit in four at-bats, along with a run driven. Well, I am hoping he stays up in the majors for a while.
