We all know that the Orioles got beat by the Red Sox on Friday, 10-3; however, fans who root for the Birds will remember this game for the fact that they stood up and showed enough was enough. The offense didn't do much, Zach Britton was terrible and it was just a bad loss.
Now, perhaps the Orioles have reached their breaking point.
In the eighth inning, Sox slugger David Ortiz and Oriole reliever Kevin Gregg had a differing of opinion when it came to baseball etiquette at the plate. Moments later, they would engage in a fight - where no punches landed - and clear the benches, bullpen and wherever else.
After the game, Gregg spoke to the media
. You have to love what he said
. The Red Sox may feel different, but I think he spoke the truth. It's never good to see a fight, but the Orioles needed to show some fire in a big way.
The game was over at that point; however, the fact that Gregg and the Orioles decided to stand up to the powerful Red Sox spoke volumes. It didn't make a difference in the final score in Friday, but maybe this incident will serve as a wakeup call for the Orioles.
Maybe not.
Really, the Birds are who they are. They are a team ravaged by injuries, a young pitching staff that has not taken a big step forward, plus a lack of talent.
The only thing right now is will the season get even worse?
The Orioles had been beat down throughout the week by their opponents. Something had to give. That's what happened on Friday night.
