This afternoon, the Orioles re-signed shortstop, Cesar Izturis to one-year, $1.5 million deal. Well, I’m sure we all are a bit surprised that Cesar will be back in Baltimore; however, he’ll give the 2011 squad a strong defensive infielder.

Let’s not also discount that he’s a nice insurance policy if Brian Roberts gets hurt.

Considering that J.J. Hardy was brought to the Orioles via trade by the Twins to help bolster the offense, I figured that Izturis would be sent on his way.

Now, it looks like he’ll serve as a utility infielder along with Brendan Harris – who came in the Hardy trade as well.

As for the Winter Meetings, the Orioles are a much better squad than they were last week. The squad is far more solid with the additions of Mark Reynolds and Hardy, plus with Koji Uehara bring re-signed. However, it’s just plain frustrating how much the Boston Red Sox have pretty much become a big time threat to win the American League East and perhaps a world title.

With the baseball world waiting to see what the New York Yankees do in terms of their dance with Cliff Lee, one has to think how high the bar will be set in the AL East for 2011.

It’s even more maddening to see free agents bypass Charm City to join other teams. The team has missed out on several premier first basemen and could perhaps simply not entice any of them to join a rebuilding squad – no matter the cost.

There’s still more to do with the Orioles, but so far Andy MacPhail and the front office have done a nice job considering the cards they’ve been dealt.
