When I saw Manny Machado injure himself in that fateful game in Tampa Bay during the second to last weekend of the season, I reacted with a “holy sh*t” comment.
I was amazed that after the gruesome image of Machado lying on the stretcher as he carted off the field that the injury would not require surgery. At the time, it looked like Machado dodged a major bullet and would be ready for Spring Training.
It was nothing short of a miracle that he did not rip the ligaments badly in his ankle or knee.
However, Machado will indeed have surgery, and it is scheduled today.
I would worry for Machado was on the wrong side of thirty, but he’s still a very, very young man and with rest, luck and rehab, the All-Star third baseman should be fine. He should be fielding sometime in the spring, working in the batting cage and whatever else.
Then again, Machado is having a major procedure done and there could be complications down the road.
From the Baltimore Sun: Manny Machado is scheduled to have reconstructive surgery to repair the medial patellofemoral ligament in his left knee today in Los Angeles.
We'll hear later today that the surgery was a success. That’s because we never hear surgeries are not successful. That usually isn’t determined until months down the road when things aren’t going well and the whispers start.
The Orioles hope that's a road not taken.
Machado's rehab process is estimated to be between four and six months. Five months would put Machado's return in the middle of March, giving him about two-plus weeks to be ready for Opening Day on March 31 at Camden Yards.
My guess is Machado will return in time to begin the season. And, eventually, he’ll be as good as before. But I’d be surprised if he didn’t start the 2014 season slowly. I’ve seen it happen several times over the years.
I would think that the Orioles will be judicious as to how they use Machado this Spring.
Machado should be brought into the fold slowly when healthy, and he may perhaps miss part of spring training.
Really, let’s hope to see at least the same guy who wowed us at the end of 2012 and during 2013.
