Baltimore Orioles vs. Washington Nationals -- April 5th, 2009: Washington, D.C.Baltimore Orioles vs. Washington Nationals -- April 5th, 2009: Washington, D.C.

Right-hander Shairon Martis started the game for Washington and threw six innings and gave up three runs on 11 hits in his final tune-up for the regular season. Meanwhile, his counterpart on the mound, Baltimore’s Alfredo Simon, went  4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits.

Washington started off the game off in dramatic fashion and gave fans a beacon of hope when the season starts on Monday.

They took advantage of Alfredo Simon the first inning as he gave up singles to Cristian Guzman and Ryan Zimmerman; thereafter, he walked Adam Dunn.  The next batter, Josh Willingham took a pitch from Simon and deposited it the left-field bullpen to give the Nationals a quick 4-0 lead.

Just when the Nationals may have had Simon’s number, he’d walk one more batter, but get out of the frame without any more damage. Simon would settle in and only allowed two more Washington batters on base, before he was pulled out of the game in the fifth inning.

Martis got through the first two innings with little damage; however, in the third inning, he ran into trouble.

First baseman Aubrey Huff quickly put the Orioles back in the game with a three-run homer off the facing of the second deck in right.

Baltimore tied the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Scott Moore; however, Washington took back the lead in the bottom off the seventh courtesy of a Josh Willingham groundout.
